Fargo is an original 1996 Coen Brothers movie, featured Billy Bob Thornton (as Molly Solverson), Martin Freeman (as Bob Odenkirk) and Bob Odenkirk. Tolman received praise for her performance in the role of Minnesota policeman Molly Solverson, with Vanity Fair writing the following "calmly and assuredly stole the entire show". The actress won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Film/Miniseries and was nominated for Best Actress at both the Emmy Awards & Golden Globes for her performance. Tolman also had an appearance on the Mindy Show, playing Abby Berman a romance writer. In 2015, her second part was played by Michael Dougherty in the film, horror-film Krampus. Tolman has a breakout performance in Fargo, declined support roles in the film as wives, mothers and best friends in order to take on a role that was more distinct. Tolman had a role on ABC as a character in Downward Dog (based on Animal Media Group's web-series). The show was canceled after just one season. Tolman was a star on ABC's drama series Emergence that debuted on September 24, 2019. The show was canceled on May 21, 2020 after just one episode despite "pretty good" numbers, as per Tolman.
